Introduction
The features listed here are part of the upcoming paid version. You can sign up to be notified when it becomes available. In the meantime you can try the ALPHA version of the free offering:
Custom Space Repetition
DictionaryGames uses a custom spaced repetition algorithm to minimize pain and maximize learning outcomes. The application will quiz you less often on the words you have already learnt (but need reminding) and more often on words you have difficulty mastering (to help you memorize them).
Unlike other applications, DictionaryGames does not assume you can study daily. The application offers features allowing you to cram and review the material whenever you wish.
Dynamic Puzzles
The flashcards are dynamic. The word puzzles are always different, making them more intellectually engaging. The puzzle is different each time the student is quizzed on a given word. The questions and clues are varied, using synonyms, antonyms, a large pool of example sentences and definitions of different meanings.
Automatically Adjusted Vocabulary
DictionaryGames learns from your performance and adjusts the level of vocabulary difficulty to match.
Learning Velocity
Many other language learning applications focus on recording streaks. DictionaryGames tracks your learning progress by counting newly acquired words and uses this information to predict how quickly you will reach your vocabulary goals. It can also indicate when you are falling behind your target schedule.
Smart Vocabulary Building
The new words are not added randomly. They are selected using factors like your performance, vocabulary you already know, semantic relationships between words, frequency of their occurrence in English, and other parameters. The algorithm driving these suggestions is optimized to help you fill in the gaps in your knowledge and add to it with the most useful vocabulary.
The application also allows you to select specific areas of interest, for example, business or technology or arts. Once the explicit preferences are specified, a user is presented with the relevant vocabulary.
Typing Answers
Most flashcard applications do not require you to type the answers. DictionaryGames is different. To make sure you really do know each word you have to be able to spell it. Having to type in your answers makes it more challenging but results in more effective learning. And it makes cheating difficult!
Multiplatform
DictionaryGames works on all modern browsers, including their smartphone and tablet versions. However, since typing on mobile devices is often less convenient, the desktop version is recommended for the best learning experience.
Competitive Play
Students can challenge each other to a flashcard duel - to compete in real-time - solving the same set of puzzles.
